Question

A rabbit runs in a straight line with a velocity of +1.4 m/s for a period of time, rests for 11 s, and then runs again along the same line at+0.57 m/s for an unknown amount of time. The rabbit travels a total distance of 1308 m, and its average speed is 0.84 m/s. (a) What is the total time the rabbit spendsrunning at 1.4 m/s?
1_____________ s

(b) How long does it spend running at 0.57m/s?
2 s

thanks for any help!

Explanation / Answer

therefore 0.84m/s = [(1.4m/s)(t1) +(0.57m/s)(t2)]/(t1 + 11s +t2) or (0.84m/s)(t1 + 11s + t2) =(1.4m/s)(t1) + (0.57m/s)(t2) or 0.84t1 + 9.24s + 0.84t2 =1.4t1 + 0.57t2 or 0.56t1 - 0.27t2 = 9.24s
Now total distance travelled is (1.4m/s)(t1) +(0.57m/s)(t2) therefore 1.4t1 + 0.57t2 = 1308s
Solving the above two equations we get t1 = 514sand t2 = 1032s
Therefore the total time the rabbit run at a speed of 1.4m/sis 514s
and the total time the rabbit run at the speed of 0.57m/s is1032s
