Question
Hi Guys;
I need the solution of 4.3 only following the format below.
thanks
4.3) Estimate the tensile strength of 4000 psi (27.5 MPa) brick units. Discuss the possible importance of this tensile strength Discuss the factors affecting the compressive strength of brick. Why are clay brick units cored? How much coring is allowed for solid and for hollow clay 4.4 4.5 brick units? 4.6 What are the minimum face shell and web thicknesses specified for 8 in. (200 mm) hollow concrete blocks? 4.7 Discuss how test methods can affect the measured tensile and compressive strengths of masonry units? 4.8 Define IRA and explain its significance as a material property. If possible, perform an IRA test and report the result. a) Define the terms used in the problem, if applicable (e.g. Veneer) b) Most assigned essay problems have stated or implied problems. If applicable: a. Rephrase the problem (e.g. regional variation in veneer) b. State why the problem is important (e.g. why there is regional variation in c) State the controlling factors: (e.g. what makes you pick one sort of veneer.) d) Make recommendation (e.g. pick the veneer and say why)
Explanation / Answer
As per ACI, flexural tensile strength is calculated by 7.5 underroot fck where fck is in psi. Hence the strength is 474.341psi
Note:I had refer any journals and in most of them tensile strength of brick varies about 30% for same brick which indicates there is no perfect test for finding tensile strength of brick.
