Material Science / Metallurgy question
Problem 2: Sterling silver: System Ag-Cu Sterling silver is an alloy of Ag with 7.5 wt-% Cu (see phase diagram below) a) Describe the expected microstructure if the specimen is heated from RT to 782°C b) The specimen is now cooled lowly to 400 °C. What woukd be the microstructure c) Assume that the specimen equilibrated at 782°C is now cooled very rapidly to d What do you expect to happen if annealing at 400 °C continues? and then equilibrated at 782°C. and the relative phase content? 400°C. Describe the microstructure that you expect.Explanation / Answer
At 782C the expected microstructure is FERRITE The specimen is cooled slowly to 400C then its microstructure changes to Ferrite and pearlite Due to rapid cooling specimen becomes more harder and expected small grains and also has more residual stress Annealing is the process of cooling the specimen very slowly. It gives more ductility and less residual stress. Large grain structure is obtained by annealing.
