Question

Please be brief, precise, and write clearly so I can read it Briefly explain why electromagnetism is the catalyst which is the basis for energy conversion from mechanical to electrical and electrical to mechanical in power systems. Write down the mathematical representation of the following laws from electromagnetism and define each term in the relationships as well as briefly explaining how the particular law applies to energy conversion. a) b) i) Ampere's law ii) Faraday's law ii) Lorentz's force law c) How does a three-phase induction motor operate? What makes it go? d) How does a three-phase synchronous generator operate? What makes it go? e) State four major differences between three-phase induction and synchronous machines. D Briefly explain the concept of flux bunching and how it helps us determine the direction of induced voltages and currents. Apply this concept in answering the questions in part (g) below. g) The figure below demonstrates a simple one coil rotating machine. will rotate voltage at i) If we operate the machine as a generator, that is the prime mover w the coil counter clock wise, indicate the polarity of the generated v the terminal. ii) If we operate the machine as a motor and want the coil to rotate clock wise; indicate the polarity of the applied voltage at t the terminal. e a

Explanation / Answer

c). In Induction motor, AC power is supplied to the motor's stator which creates a magnetic field. The rotor rotates at a slower speed than the stator field. Therefore, stator's magnetic field is relative to the stator. This induces an opposing current in the rotor. The three phase induction motor is self starting.

d) Three phase synchronous generator works on the principle of Elecrtomagnetic induction. It uses concept of rotating magnetic field. Synchronous motors need some initial mechanical to rotate the rotor. There can be different ways for that like coupling it with another motor.

e)
