Question

Indicate whether each statement is correct or incorrect regarding the following values for a 130 pound 5 foot 2 inch tall female. A=Correct and B=Incorrect
VE = 7 L/m
f = 14/min
PaCO2 = 36 mm Hg
PECO2 = 25 mm Hg

VT = 500 ccs

VD is 0.58 L/breath

VD/VT is lower than normal

the patient is hyperventilating

VD/VT is lower than normal

      -       A.       B.

the patient is hyperventilating

Explanation / Answer

VD is dead space air. VT or VE is the tidal volume. VE is given as 7L/min; i.e. 7000ml/min = (7000/60) = 116.67 cm3 per second. So, statement 1 is incorrect.

VD/VT = (PaCO2 - PeCO2) / PaCO2

= (36-25)/ 36 = 0.305 (coming under normal range).

Normal values of VD/VT are 0.28 to 0.33. So, statement 3 is incorrect.

VD = VT * 0.305 = 7*0.305 = 2.135 L/min

f = 14 breaths in one minute are there.

So, VD = 2.135/14 = 0.1525 L/breath.

So, statement 2 is also incorrect.

Statement 4 is also incorrect. Normally 12-16 breaths per minutes are there. If the number of breadths is above 16, then the person is considered to be hyperventilating.

All four statements are incorrect.
