Topic - Physics for my Child - 15 SENTENCES REQUIRED - TYPED ONLY

Instructions:

Describe the three topics in one paragraph each to your 5th Grader who has no familiarity with physics. You must NOT use physics terms without defining them at a level of explanation a 10 YEAR-OLD will understand. (For this assignment write THREE PARAGRAPHS, with Each written at a college level and with at least five sentences, including a topic sentence and three or more specific, accurate detailed supporting sentences, and a conclusion sentence.)

1) Compare and Contrast the Law of Conservation of Momentum with the Law of Conservation of Energy. Describe at least three differences and at least two commonalities.

2) Compare and Contrast angular momentum with linear momentum. Describe at least two differences and at least two commonalities.

3) Compare and Contrast kinetic energy due to an object’s linear motion with kinetic energy due to an object’s rotation about an axis. Again, include at least two differences and at least two commonalities.

Explanation / Answer

1. Law of conservation of momentum states that for a system where no external force ( force is the push or pull on any body), the product of mass of the system and its speed ( distance covered per unit time) in any direction remains constant.
Law of conservation of energy states that enbergy cannot be created nor be destroyed, but just can be changed from one form to another

Differences : Law of conservation of momentum is applicable only when there are no external forces present, lawe of conservation of energy is always true
Law of conservation of momentum is a directional thing and can be applied to various different directinos, whereas law of conservation of energy is not like this
Law of conservation of momentum is always tru for a system wioth no external force, where as law of conservationof energy has to be applied to system and the surroundings .

similarities : both laws are conservation laws which tend to conserve ( save) something
both laws can be verified but not proven

2. Angular momentum : the tendency of the particle to keep rotating about a point in space is its angular momentyum which is physically related directly to mass, linear speed and distance from the central point.
linear momentum L the tendency of the marticle to keep moving in a straight line in space is its linear momentum which is physically related to its mass and speed

Differences : Angular momentum is related to rotating objects where as linear momentum is related to objects moving in a straight line
angular momentum has unit of kg m^2/s, whereas linear momentum has units of kg m/s

similarities : Both angular and linear momentum follow conservation laws in absence of external influences
both are associated to tendency of the object to keep continuing its current form of motion

3. linear KE : The energy possesed by object by virtuew of its motion in a straight line
rotational KE : The energy possesed by object rotating about an axis by virtue of its rotation about this axis

differences : linear KE is related top objects moving in straight line whereas rotational KE is r4elated to objects rotating about an axis
to generate rotational KE, one has to apply force at a distance from the center of rotation where as in translational KE only the force is important and not the distance form any axis

similarities L Both of these are forms of energy
   both follow universal conservation laws
