Question
The figure below shows the paths followed by three charged particles through a region of uniform magnetic field that is directed perpendicular to the page. The particles have the same mass, and their charges have the same magnitude. The paths of particles 1 and 2 represent one quarter of a circle, while that followed by particle 3 is a half circle. (a) Rank these particles, from largest to smallest, based on their speed. (Use only > or = symbols. Do not include any parentheses around the letters or symbols.) (b) Rank these particles, from largest to smallest, based on the magnitude of the magnetic force they experience in this region. (Use only ">" or""symbols. Do not include any parentheses around the letters or symbols.) (c) Rank the particles based on the time they spend passing through the region shown in the picture, from largest to smallest. (Use only ">" or "=" symbols. Do not include any parentheses around the letters or symbols.)Explanation / Answer
a) The particle which has largest radius will have maximum velocity so rank of the particles based on velocity:
2>1>3
b) The force exprienced is directly proportional to the velocity of particle so rank according to the force:
2>1>3
c) Since time period of one rotation does not depend on the velocity of radius so it takes same time to complete one circle for particle 1,2&3. Here particle 1&2 covered 1/4 circle so time taken will be same and particle 3 completed 1/2 circle so this time will be double of time taken by 1 or 2. So time spent in the megnatic field is as per given rank:
3>2=1
