A 78 kg skateboarder is performing a stunt at local talent show. His an is to use a spring to launch himself towards a ramp that will propel him straight upward. He designs the spring launcher so that it can be compressed 2.2 meters, but he does not know how strong his spring should be. His goal is to reach a height of at least 6 meters above the floor. Explain how the skateboarder could determine the minimum spring constant needed (for the spring) so that he can achieve his desired height. Determine the value of this minimum spring constant.

Explanation / Answer

Using law of conservation of energy

energy stored in spring = gravitational potential energy

0.5*k*x^2 = m*g*H

0.5*k*2.2^2 = 78*9.8*6

0.5*k*2.2^2 = 4586.4

k = 4586.4/(0.5*2.2^2) = 1895.2 N/m
