Prelab Exercises and Questions Prelab Data/Analysis Postlab /30 1. Before collecting and analyzing the experimental /60 data for this experiment, it is useful to first analyze a few simple collisions Start with an inelastic collision between a 3kg mass in motion and a 2kg mass at rest Calculate the total momentum and the total kinetic energy before and after the collision. Total /100 Initial Conditions 1kg Momentum of 4kg mass- Momentum of 1kg mass = Total Momentum before = Kinetic energy of 4kg mass- Kinetic energy of 1kg mass - Total kinetic energy before = Final Conditions 5kg Momentum of 5kg mass - Total Momentum after= Kinetic energy of 5kg mass = Total kinetic energy after = 2. Was total momentum conserved in this collision? (yes or no)

Explanation / Answer

Since 4 kg mass is moving and 1 kg is at rest so

at initial conditions

momentum of 4 kg mass=mv=4*5=20kgm/s

momentum of 1 kg mass=1*0=0

kinetic energy of 4 kg mass=1/2mv*v=1/2*4*5*5=50J

kinetic energy of 1 kg mass=0 because object is at rest

total kinetic energy= Energy of 4kg mass=50J

After collision

momentum of 5 kg mass=mv=5*4=20kgm/s

total momentum=20kgm/s

kinetic energy of 5 kg mass=1/2*m*v*v=1/2*5*4*4=40J

total energy=40J

2) yes momentum is conserved in this collision but energy is not.
