Question

Please explain how to find the answer. The correct answer is circled. 15. Three point-like objects, numbered 1, 2, and 3, are placed in the x-y plane as shown in the figure. Despite what the figure suggests, they have equal masses, that is, mi = m2 = m3 The magnitude of the gravitational force of object 1 on object 2 has magnitude 300 N. What is the magnitude of the net gravitational force, in N, on object 2, at the origin, due to the other two masses? (a) o (b) 300 ) 400 (e) 500 (0, 3.00) m (-4.00, 0) m 12 ms 32

Explanation / Answer

m1 = m2 = m

r12 = distance between mass 1 and mass 2 = 3 m

F12 = 300 N

using the equation

F12 = Gm1 m2 /r122

300 = (6.67 x 10-11) m2 /(3)2

m = 6.4 x 106 kg

F32 = G m2 m3/r322

F32 = (6.67 x 10-11) (6.4 x 106 )2 /(4)2 = 170.8 N

Fnet = sqrt(F122 + F322) = sqrt((300)2 + (170.8)2) = 344 N
