Question

Problem 14.13- Enhanced - with Feedback Part A The New England Merchants Bank Building in Boston is 152 m high. On windy days it sways with a frequency of 0.14 Hz, and the acceleration of the top of the building can reach 2.5 % of the free- fall acceleration, enough to cause discomfort for occupants. What is the total distance, side to side, that the top of the building moves during such an oscillation? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units. Explanation / Answer

Given,

h = 152 m; f = 0.14 Hz ; a = 2.5% of g = 0.245 m/s^2

We know that the maximum acceleration in SHM is

a = A w^2

w = 2 pi f = 2 x 3.14 x 0.14 = 0.88 rad/s

A = a/w^2 = 0.245 /0.88 = 0.323 m

Side to side distance will be:

D = 2A = 2 x 0.32 = 0.64 m

HEnce, d = 0.64 m (Upto 2 significant figures)
