IMPULSES AND PAIRS OF FORCES Name Preliminary Questions Answer each of the following 3 questions in the space provided. The Preliminary Questions are due at the beginning of the laboratory period and should be turned in as you enter the room. If you are unsure about the answer to any of the Preliminary Questions, be sure to consult your TA or instructor in advance of lab. In the first two questions, you are asked to make predictions about certain situations. Since these are your predictions about what you expect to observe, there is no right or wrong answer. However, your grade will be based on your ability to present a clear and logical rationale for your predictions. Your reasons might include what you have observed in previous laboratories, things you have learned in lecture, or personal experiences. Answers without reasoning will not receive full credit. Consider two identical objects (A and B) which are at rest. A constant force F, is then applied to object A for a given time, T, while a constant force F/2 is applied to object B for a time, 2T. For each quantity listed below, state whether you expect the two values to be the same or, if not, which one should be greater. Explain your reasoning. I. a) b) c) the distances traveled for the time period each force is applied, the velocities at the end of each specified time period, and the accelerations at the end of each time period.

Explanation / Answer

F = ma

mA = mB

Fb = Fa/2 , Tb = 2 Ta

c) Aa( or mass A) = Fa/ ma , Ab ( for mass B) = Fb/ mb

Aa= F/m , Ab = F/ 2m

therefore acceleartion for mass B will be half of the acceleration for mass A

b) Va = Aa Ta , Vb= Ab Tb

Va= AT ,,,Vb = ( A/2) (2T) = AT

therefore velocity for both the masses will be same.

c)Sa = 1/2 AT^2 ,,,,Sb = 1/2 ( A/2) ( 2T)^2

Sa= 1/2 AT^2 , .....Sb =1/2 ( 2AT^2)

distance travelled by mass B is double than distance travlleled by mass A
