Question
Can someone find and explain the correct answer to this problem for me. I am having a difficult time understanding this. In working on this problem, I assumed that this was a genomic imprinting problem. And said that the mother was Hh, and grandmother was HH, but I wasn't sure if those were correct and why they would be if they happened to be correct. Anyways, here's the problem:Suppose a nuclear gene exists in two alleles that we will call H for a normal head and h for a small head. A female fruit fly (called female A) with a normal head had a mother (called female B) with a small head. Female A with a normal head was mated to a homozygous HH male who also had a normal head. All of the offspring had small heads. Explain this pattern of inheritance. In the diagram below, fill in the genotypes of the flies on the lines provided.
Female B with a small head _____ X Father of female A ______
?
Female A with normal head ______ X Father HH___
?
Offspring with small heads ______
Explanation / Answer
Female B with a small head _Hh____ X Father of female A __HH____ Female A with normal head __HH____ X Father HH___ Offspring with small heads __Hh____ Epigenetic inheritance is a different sort of concept. It's not really about letters and genotypes with epigenetics. You're getting into issues like envioronmental toxins, lack of stimulation, malnutrition, etc. It's an interesting way to introduce the topic, but probably effective. We can often find answers in the code. We can't always find answers in the code. And sometimes the answers are somewhere in between. Epigenetics deals with that frustrating in-between part.
