Question
Please, help me out with my Biology assignment. No plaguarism!
1) The number of mitochondria per cell can differ greatly depending on the type of cell. For example, liver and muscle cells can have over one thousand mitochondria per cell. Conversely, adipose cells (cells that make up fat tissue) have very few mitochondria per cell. Based on the function of the mitochondria, why do think different cell types would vary so much in the number of mitochondria? (3pts)
2) A group of insects called “water striders” can skate along on the surface of water using their legs (see picture). Water striders make use of surface tension, the ability of water’s surface to have elasticity, to move along on top of water. Which of the three important properties of water allows for surface tension? (3 points)
3) In your own words, explain why saturated fats are solid at body temperatures and unsaturated fats are liquid at body temperatures. (2 points)
4) If a cell needed to import very specific, large molecules across the plasma membrane, which type of bulk transport would the cell use? (2pts)
Explanation / Answer
1. Muscle cells are expected to contain more mitochondria than adipose cells because the function of mitochondria is to generate energy in a cell i the form of ATP. Muscle cells require more energy to function for the contraction of muscles than adipose cells therefore they have higher number of mitochondria.
2. Water is a polar molecule, due to which it can form strong chemical bonds with other water molecules. Polarity of water is responsible for its high surface tension.
Water has hydrogen bonding between different water molecules, which results in surface tension.
Water has the property of cohesiveness as a result of hydrogen bonding between different water molecules.
3. Saturated fats are solid at room temperature because they do not have double bonds. They contain single bonds between carbon and hydrogen, which are very diffcult to break. As a result saturated fats are very stable and non reactive. On the other hand, unsaturated fats have doube bonds which are very easy to break. As a result, they are liquids at room temperature.
4. Phagocytosis is used to import specific large molecules across the plasma membrane.
