Question
Need help with all questions. This is what I put thus far, I think I'm right. Not understanding this concept for microbiology. Need help with questions E-H... thanks! A) C B)B&D C) A D) aerobe: lungs Anaerobes: intestines Facultative: muscle cells E. Of the following 3 types of organisms -obligate aerobe, obligate anaerobe, facultative anaerobe -which can use oxygen for metabolism? F. Of the following 3 types of organisms- obligate aerobe, obligate anaerobe, facultative anaerobe - which can detoxify oxygen? G. Are the above results qualitative or quantitative? Explain your answer. H. Your friend repeats the above experiment and observes growth of all 4 organisms on both plates. Provide an explanation for her results. (You may assume that your results are correct, since you have repeated the experiment several times and gotten the same results).Explanation / Answer
E) Obligate aerobes- they require oxygen as a must for their survival and they die in the absence of oxygen.
Obligate anaerobes- they live only in the absence of oxygen and in the presence of oxygen they cannot survive.
Facultative anaerobes- they usualluy uses anerobic respiration or fermentation for their survival but they can switch to oxygen whenever oxygen is present. In simple, they are flexible or adaptible to both the presence and absence of oxygen.
so, both obligate aerobe and facultative anaerobe can use oxygen for metabolism
F) Aerobic respiration usually generates oxygen free radicals or Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) which can be dangerous for survival. so, aerobic organisms usually contain enzymes like peroxidase and catalase for breaking this superoxide radicals and thereby detoxifying oxygen. But anerobes they doesnot posses these enzymes. Therefore obligate aerobe and facultative anearobe can detoxify oxygen.
G) Here, the results are qualitative because, they just explain whether the organism is present or not and doesnot provide any information about how much or the quantity of organisms present. Hence the results are not quantitative.
H) This presence of all the four types of organisms on both plates may be the result of some spontaneous mutation which can usually occur in the case of micro organisms.
