Question

Please explain this problem and how to intrerpret it.

The first plot below indicates the coupler curve for a particular straight-line mechanism. A known point "P" of the coupler follows this path. The point follows the solid path when the mechanism is open, but follows the dotted path otherwise. The second plot shows the variation in the horizontal position of point P as a function of the input angle theta. Assuming the angle theta increases at a constant rate during the "straight-line" portion of the curve, answer the following questions: Is point P traveling toward the left or the right along the straight-line portion of the path? Is the speed of point P increasing, decreasing, or constant during straight-line motion?

Explanation / Answer

The dash points represent different length of crank. Also it does represent 5 degree of motions of crank.

In crank motion crank moves with constant speed. The coupler moves along the path line tracing point p. The surf of coupler mainly increases at starting and then goes down substantially for 360 degree motion. Now we need to decide in witch direction doing couplers is moving exactly as you can see in the curve path at downwards it have a straight line after that egg like shape.

Coupler's path are always symmetrical to each other or mirror image of each.

Now I can say that coupler point p is moving from right to left. The couplers motion will decided from couplers angle curve. At starting couplers has particular angles.
