Joe is attempting to remove the tire in the drawing but can't seem to get enough torque on the lug nuts. Assuming his hand must remain at point A on the wrench, what can he do to make his job easier? Susan is designing a truss to support a wind loading from a sign. Due to sign geometry she must match the following heights but can change the base dimension b from 2 m to 8 m. How could she minimize force at the pinned supports?Explanation / Answer
1) To make his job easier, Joe could try taking a very long piece of steel pipe, attach it to the end of the breaker bar and try again. This will increase moment arm of the lever making his job easier.
2) She can increase the base of the truss. Doing so will reduce the couple acting at pinned supports thus, subsequently, reducing the force acting on it.
