Question

Consider a station consisiting of three machines in parallel adn that have different processing speeds. Machine 1 processes an average of one part every 4 minutes. Machine 2 processes an average of one part every 5 minutes. Machien processes an average of oen part every 2 minutes. EAch part requires processing at only one machine before it leaves the station. Assuming the machiens work non-stop and are never starved of parts, what is the average number of minutes between part completions for the station as a whole?

Explanation / Answer

Given:

Time required by machine 1 for part completion: 4 mins

Time required by machine 2 for part completion: 5 mins

Time required by machine 3 for part completion: 2 mins

To find: Average time required by the station for part completion

As there are 3 machines, the average of the time taken by each machine , will give the average time taken by tahe station for part completion

i.e. (4+5+2)/3 = 3.6 rounding off 4 minutes
