Question

And part c, determine the maximum power production potential of the turbine, W out by using a system which includes the trubine, and points 2 and 3. Points 1 and 4 are not to be included in this system

Consider the reservoir used for power generation as shown below: The depth of the left body of water is z1 = 100 m while the depth of the right body of water is z4 = 5 m. The density of the water is constant and taken to be 1000 kg/m3. If the volume flow rate is 5 m3/s, what is the mass flow rate? Determine the maximum power production potential, Wdotout, of the turbine by using a system which includes the turbine, and the points 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Explanation / Answer

1) mass flow rate = Volume flow rate x density of water

= 1000*5=5000kg/s

2) at 1 potential = rho * g * z1

at2 = rho*g*z4

at3= rho*g*z4

at4 = rho*g*z4

net work will be 1+2-(3+4)

= rho*g*(z1-z2)

=5000*10*95

=4750000

=4.75MW
