Prof. said this would be on an exam but I am not sure what he wants for an "answer" as it does not seem to ask a question. We may be calculating the degrees of freedom for the pencil but again I am not sure as there is not a direct question stated. Any helpful insight would be appreciated.

you misunderstood your professor...he might have said that he will be giving problems related to degree of freedom in the exam...you may be given a mechanism and asked to find the degree of freedom of it....he wont ask you the definition of DOF but problems related to it...
