Question

An escalator carries you from one level to the next in an airport terminal. The upper level is at height h above the lower level, and the length of the escalator is L . Assume that your mass is m and the gravitiy constant is  g. How much work does the up escalator do on you when you ride it from the lower level to the upper level? Also, how much work does the down escalator do on you when you ride it from the upper level to the lower level? Enter your answer as an expression using the variables found in the problem.

Explanation / Answer

Workdone by the escalator from lower to higher levels

W= (Fd) cos 180

= - mgh

Negative sign indicates that work is being done against the gravity.

-----------------

Workdone by the escalator from upper to lower level

W= mgh cos (0)

= mgh.
