Question

IN NEXT 38 In Figure (a) below, unpolarized light is sent into a system of three polarizing sheets. The angles ??, ?2, and ?3 of the polarizin scale). Angles 01 and 03 are fixed, but angle 92 can be varied. Figure (b) gives the intensity of the light emerging from sheet 3 as a function of 02. (The scale of the intensity axis is not indicated.) What percentage of the light's initial intensity is transmitted by the system when 2 # 600? g directions are measured counterclockwise from the positive direction of the y axis (they are not drawn to isoe Number Units Question Attemots: 1 of 5 used SAVE FOR LAYER

Explanation / Answer

It is given that angles ?1 and ?3 are fixed but angle ?2 can be varied.

Here we assume that without loss of generality we choose ?1 = 0 degree and ?3 = 90 degree

And given that ?2 = 60 degree

Then ?? = ?2 - ?1 = 60 degree and

??' = ?3 - ?2 = 30 degree

Then formula for the percentage of the light's initialintensity is transmitted by the three-sheet system when ?2= 60 degree is

If / Ii = (1/2)cos2(??)cos2(??')

=(1/2)cos2(60)cos2(30) = 9.375 %
