II. Essay: (10 pts) Read the paragraph and the diagram below and write an essay in no more than 200 words to discuss the content of this paragraph. Note that some information is wrong in the diagram as well as in the paragraph below. You need to point them out and present the correct information in your essay. Achilles tendon "Although muscles produce linear forces, motions at joints are all rotary. The rotary torque is the product of muscle force and its moment arm. The moment arm can be defined as the distance from the insertion of the muscle (or tendon) to the axis of rotation. For example, in the graph below the axis of rotation is the center of the ankle joint. The moment arm of Achilles tendon is shown as the blue arrow. This moment arm becomes shorter when the foot is on the ground (left panel) than when the heel is raised during takeoff (right panel)." midsupport takeoff Moment Arm of Achilles Tendon Increases at Takeoff

Explanation / Answer

Write an essay in no more than 200 words to discuss the content of this paragraph.

"Moment arm of the achilles tendon" which refers to the distance between the achilles tendon and the ankle joint, which serves as 'the fulcrum of rotation'. We know that, greater the power of the leg drive, greater the acceleration of the runner (F = ma). The amount of energy stored in the tendons which to be used in the next step.

The authors conclude that 56% of the variation in running economy between runners could be predicted by moment arm of the achilles tendon. The achilles tendon moment arm is fixed in adults and the above mentioned 56% in variation is also fixed.

We know that, an impulse will be given by -

Impulse = F' t = (m' a') t

Impulse = m' v

Impulse = Momentum

Since running is a forward motion of the entire body, the horizontal component of a momentum is much more important than the vertical component. Moment arm of the achilles tendon increases during takeoff. Moment of inertia is greatest at take-off during the entire running cycle.

Larger distance the body will move during swing phase which depends on :

The turning effect created by a force is moment of force, which also called as "torque". It is a vector quantity. It's direction is defined by the orientation of the axis of rotation. In the human body, the center of gravity lies on the midline left to right and front to back.

Increasing weight also increases stability.
