MasteringPhysics: Ch 22 HW Part 2 Google Chrame Secure https://session.masteringphysics.com/myct/itemView?a ID= 90951 246 : Part A The device in (Figure 1) is a so-callad Newton's cradla. When you raise steel sphere 1 and then release It its momentum is transferred to the other four steel spheres, and this momenturn transfer causes sphere 5 to rise When it fals, momantum is again transferred through the rowof sphares, and sphere 1 rises and falls, and so on. Imagine modifying the device by positoning a charged wire in such a way that every time each end steel sphere rises, it touches the wire and acquires 15 units of charg2 You ft sphere 1 and allaw it to tauch the wre: far the first timne and acquire 15 unis of charge. You release the sphere and it hits the othars, transfeming its momentum and causing sphere 5 to rise. Sphere 5 touches the charged wire, descends, hits the row of spheres, and transfers its momenturn so that sphere 1 rises again and touchas the wire for the second time Haw many units of charge docs sphere 1 carry just before it tourhas tha wire this sacond tim N- 5.4 units of charge Subrniit Incorrect; Try Again: 3 attempts remaining Part B Figure How many units of charge does sphere 1 cary just before it touches the wire after one more round of this momentum-transfer motion? Explanation / Answer

when the first sphere has 15 unit of charge an it touches the second sphere, charges get equally divided among all the five sphere. Therefore each sphere (1-5) now has 3 unit of charge.

Sphere 5 rises and touch the wire acquiring 15 more unit of charge, thereby totalling 18 unit of charge on it and there is 12 unit of total charge on spheres 1 to 4, hence net charge on the system is 30 unit of charge. When the sphere 5 touches sphere 4, each sphere get 30/5 = 6 unit of charge. ANSWER OF PART A.

Now sphere 1 rises and touch the wire, therefore total charge on it becomes 15 + 6 = 21, and the total charge on spheres 2 to 5 is 24 units. When the sphere 1 touches sphere 2, total of 21+24= 45 unit of charge is equally divided among the 5 spheres such that each sphere get 45/5 = 9 units of charge. Thus on every collision, 3 unit of charge get added on each sphere.

Hence when the sphere 5 rises and again touches the sphere 4, new charge on sphere 1 becomes 9+3 =12 unit of charge. ANSWER TO PART B
