5. 0/1 points| Previous Answers SerCP11 5.P027 My Notes Ask Your Teacher The chin-up is one exercise that can be used to strengthen the biceps muscle. This muscle can exert a force of approximately 800 N as it contracts a distance of 7.6 cm in a 76- kg male. How much work can the biceps muscles (one in each arm) perform in a single contraction? Calculate the amount of energy required to lift a 76-kg person 40 cm in performing a chin-up. Do you think the biceps muscle is the only muscle involved in performing a chin-up? O Yes No Explain. This answer has not been graded yet. Need Help? L ead.Explanation / Answer
Work done by both biceps during contraction is
W = 2 * F * displacement
= 2 (800N) (0.076 m) = 121.6 J
Total amount of energy required to lift 76 kg person 40 cm in performing chin up
= mgh joule
= 76 ( 9.8 m/s2 ) (0.4 m)
= 297.92 J
It is clear that amount of energy required in chin up is more than the amount of energy used by Bicep. So there must be additional muscle involved during chin up.
