Question

Consider the following.

(a) What is the potential of point a with respect to point b in the figure below (V = 17.0 V, R1 = 6.00 , R2 = 3.00 ) when switch S is open?
17 V.... its is a correct answer
(b) Which point, a or b, is at the higher potential?

b

(c) What is the final potential of point b with respect to ground when switch S is closed?
________V

(d) How much does the charge on each capacitor change when S is closed?
_______C (3.00 µF capacitor)
__________C (6.00 µF capacitor)

>

plz part c and d :)

6.00uF Lyw HF LamHE 3.00uF

Explanation / Answer

from the given circuit

a. when switch S is open

capacitors are charged and no current flows in the circuit

so potential drop across 6 micro F capacitor = V = 17 V

hence

form KVL

Va - Vb = 17 V

b. as plate at b is -ve charged, potential at A is higher

c. when swithc S is closed

Vb - Vg = 17 V

d. C1 = 6 uF

q1 = C1*V = 102 uC

q2 = C1*V = 102 uC

change of charge = 0 C

C2 = 3 uF

initial charge = 102 uC

final charge = 0 C

hence

change in charge = -102 uC
