Ch 22 HW Gauss's Law K) 9 of 25 ercise 22.16 Check your signs Constants Some planetary scientists have suggested that the planet Mars has an electric field somewhat similar to that of the earth, producing a net electric flux of 360-10s N-/C into the planet's surface. PartB Calculate the magnitude of the electric field at the planet's surfacs (refer to the astronomical data inside the back cover) N/C Submit PartC Find the direction of the electric field at the planet's surface O It points toward the center of Mars O it points away from the center of Mars Submit Part D Calculate the charge density on Mars, assuming all the charge is uniformly distributed over the planet's surface C/m Submit Provide Foodback Next > 0 Type here to search

Explanation / Answer

(B) flux = E ( 4 pi r^2)

for mars, r = 3.390 x 10^6 m

3.60 x 10^15 = E ( 4 pi (3.390 x 10^6)^2)

E = 24.93 N/C

(c) flux is +ve

so It point away from the center of mars.

(D) flux= Qin / e0

Q = (3.60 x 10^15) (8.854 x 10^-12) = 31874.4 C

charge density = Q / (4 pi r^2)

= 2.21 x 10^-10 C/m^2
