Question
Topic 1, Question 5: The figure below is an illustration of a series of electroscopes. In (i) the electroscope is neutral. Then a positively charged rod is brought close to the charging plate of the electroscope (ii) Next the charging plate is touched with a finger (iii). The finger is then removed (iv) and finally the positively charged rod is removed (v). In parts (iii)-(v), dial on the electroscope is not shown (iv) Now consider the following possible choices for the dial on the electroscope. 2 Which choices best illustrate the position of the dial for parts (ii)-(v)? Part (v): 1 Part (v): 2 Part (v): 2 Part (v): 2 Part (v): 1 A. Part (ii): 1 B. Part (iii): 1 C. Part (iii): 1 D. Part (iii): 2 E. Part (iii): 2 Part (iv): 1 Part (iv): '2 Part (iv):.1 Part (iv):.1 Part (iv): '2Explanation / Answer
PART:3: When positively charged rod kept near the charging plate, the negative charge will induce on the plate and positive charge will induce in the needle and the support. After touching the plate the negative charge in the plate will move to earth and positive charge remain in the electroscope.
So, the position of needle will be as in 2
PART:4: After removing hand there will be negative charge induce on the plate and the charge on the needle will be zero.
So, the position of needle will be as in 1
PART:5: After removing the charged rod , the needle and support will be left with negative charge and hence, the position of needle will be as in 2
Therefore, the option D is correct.
