Question

QUESTION1 Below are four different descriptions of how a cart moves. Please sort them from the smallest (negative) to largest (positive) taking the direction to the right as the positive direction A 10 kg cart moves from-5 m to +5 meters in 4 seconds at a constant rate. A 2 kg cart starting at rest speeds up at a constant rate. reaching +2 m in one second A 1 kg cart starting at rest speeds up to 5 mis to the right in 5 seconds. A 5 kg cart starting at rest and speeding up to be moving 4 mis to the left in 2 seconds

Explanation / Answer

(1) Distance covered = 5-(-5) = 10 m
time taken = 4 s
Now the velocity = 10/4 = 2.5 m/s2
Since the velocity is constant therefore acceleration (a1)= 0
(2) WE use kinematic equation
S = ut + (1/2)at2
2 = 0 +(1/2)a*12
a = 4m/s2
Hence the acceleration (a2) = 4 m/s2
(3) We know that
V = u +at
5 = 0 +a*5
a = 1 m/s2
hence the acceleration will be (a3)= 1 m/s2
(4) Here the object is moving toward left therefore the direction would be negative
V = u +at
-4 = 0 +a*2
a = -2m/s2
hence the acceleration would be (a4) = -2m/s2
Now we sort them from smallest to largest
a4<a1 <a3<a2
So this will be the pattern
