Question
Physies I Chapter 7 Problems Name 1 An 11.000 kg railroad cart that is traveling at a speed of 22.0 m/s collides with a 12,000 kg cart t is at rest. If the two carts lock together as a result of the collision, then what is their speed just afterward? 2. If the second cart (in question 1) had been moving at 12.0 m/s (in the same direction as the first) before the collision, then what would be their speed just after the collision if they lock together? 3. One railroad cart which weighs 14,000 kg collides with a stationary cart that weighs 16,000 kg and they lock together. If their speed immediately after the collision is 7.5 m/s, then what was the speed of the first one before the collision? 4. In which type of collision is momentum conserved, a) elastic collisions, b) inelastic collisions or c) both elastic and inelastic collisions. in which type of collision is kinetic energy conserved, a) elastic collisions, b) inelastic collisions or c) both elastic and inelastic collisions. 5. A billiard ball with a mass of 0.45 kg collides head on with a billiard ball that has a mass of 0.35 ks. The heavier billiard ball has a velocity of 4.5 m/s and the other ball is initially stationary What is the velocity of each ball immediately after the collision if the collision was perfectly elastic? 6. in a ballistic pendulum experiment, a bullet with a mass of 0.020 kg collides with a block that weighs 3.5 kg. If the bullet has an initial velocity of 170 m/s, then what is the maximum height that the block will reach? 7.Explanation / Answer
Solution)
1) According to Conservation of Momentum
M1u1+m2u2=m1v1+m2v2
11000kg*22 + 12000*0=(11000+12000)v
So, v= 10.5m/s (Ans)
=====
2) Here also,
11000*22 +12000*12=(11000+12000)v
So, v=16.78 m/s (Ans)
======
3) Here also same,
14000*u1 + 16000*0=(14000+16000)*7.5
So, u1=16.07 m/s (Ans)
=======
4)Ans is option c- momentum is conserved in both, elastic and inelastic collision.
