Question
If you were to listen to engineers involved in the construction of the Sardar Sarovar dam in India, they might tell you that the amount of concrete used is enough to lay a concrete road around the equator.
“Histories of engineering talk about dams in superlatives. They are the longest, highest, or most massive; they have the biggest reservoir or the highest head drop (distance from the reservoir surface to the powerhouse), or they were made with the least or the most amount of material. They were the first or the latest to set records in any of these ways. Dams imply a kind of engineering Olympics, a measure of people against nature” (Macy 2010)
It has also been noted that “most water managers and engineers, in most water management organisations and irrigation agencies in most countries are men”. When you watch the film in class (on dam construction in Laos), you will notice that most interviewees are men – yet when you watch Chapter 3 in this film clip[1] about communities impacted by a proposed dam in Cambodia, it is a woman speaking out. Why do you think men dominate in water management? Why do think local women are more concerned about what happens to the land and water?
