Question

Considering that sounds from a gunshot have a power of 0.5W, should you follow the rules and wear ear protection? (Sounds above 85 decibels cause hearing loss, sounds above 140 decibels cause pain) Where would it be safe to relax without fear of hearing loss and pain?

Ok, so this is my attempt, where did I go wrong?
I= P/(4 p(d)^2 )

P would be 0.5W
With d, I made the assumption of 1cm away from the ear, so 0.01m.

Then I put in the numbers,
I= 0.5/(4 p(0.01)^2 )

and got 3 X 10^-5

Now, I know that is not right..

Explanation / Answer

I= 0.5/(4 p(0.01)^2 )

you miscalculated I

its coming out to be 397.88

so Loudness = 10log(397.88/Io)

                = 145.99 dB
