Question

A suspicious package slides on a frictionless surface and then explodes into three chunks of equal mass. Chunk A has a velocity of 12.4 m/s due north. Chunk B has a velocity of 5.40 m/s and is directed 28.8 degrees south of west. Chunk C has a velocity of 5.40 m/s and is directed 28.8 degrees south of east.

Find the magnitude of the velocity of the package before it exploded.

Find the direction of the package before it exploded. Assume that east is zero degrees and the angle increases counterclockwise. Please Help

Explanation / Answer

velocity of chunk A = 12.4 j

          of chunk B = - 5.40cos28.8i - 5.40sin28.8j

          of chunk C =   5.40cos28.8 i - 5.40sin28.8 j

using momentum conservation ,

3m x v = m x (12.4 j) + m x (- 5.40cos28.8i - 5.40sin28.8j) + m x (5.40cos28.8 i - 5.40sin28.8 j)

3v   = 7.197j

v = 2.40 j m/s

velocity of package just before explosion was 2.40 m/s in north direction.
