Question

A large cylindrical water tank 11.5 m in diameter and 13.5 m tall is supported with its base 8.75 m above the ground by a stand. The water level in the tank is 10.6 m deep, and the density of the water in the tank is 1.00 g/cm3 . A very small hole is formed at the base of the vertical wall of the tank, and water is squirting out of this hole horizontally. When this water hits the ground, how far has it traveled horizontally from the hole, assuming no air resistance? the answer is 19.3 m please show all the steps

Explanation / Answer

Here, Horizontal velocity of water = sqrt(2gh)

                                                      = sqrt(2*9.8*10.6)

                                                       = 14.41 m/sec

Time taken for water to hit ground = sqrt(2h/g)

                                                       = sqrt(2*8.75/9.8)

                                                        = 1.336 sec

=> Horizontal distance water has travelled to hit ground = 14.41 * 1.336

                                                                                            = 19.3 m
