Apply concepts relating to Kepler's Laws to Lab simulation time: 40 minutes This is a "virtual Labs We will do an experiment using software which can be found at the PhE T simulations page: htps:/iphet.colorado.eduien/simulation/legacy/my-solar- system Click on the simulation to run it (you do not need to download it). You should see this: 9) Play with this simulation and "mouse" around with it. Try to figure out what all the controls do. 1) Using Selecet Preset, select "Sun and Planet". Then select, System centered, Show Traces, and Show Grid. Determine responses to the questions below by running the simulation a)What are the preset values for: the mass of the star, the mass of the planet, the distance, and the velocity? b) Describe the shape of the orbit. c) How does the distance and planet tangential speed affect the shape of the orbit? (Distance and tangential speed for the planet can be changed by editing the pink position x box and the pink velocity y box.) 4/1/2018 Astronomy-Physics: Gravitation Edit of Original by Mark Kelly

Explanation / Answer

1) mass of star - 200 , mass of planet - 10 , distance - 150 m, velcoity - 120

2) It is a circular orbit

3) Increasing the distance makes the orbit elliptical. As we keep on increasing the distance , major - axis increases.

Draw a graph between distance and orbital period. As we can see with increasing distance, time period is also increasing.

It happens because as the distance increasing , the gravitational field on the planet from the star weakens and directly affects speed

I will run for ellipse only once

distance between star and pink plant - 73 , Vx - 192.8 , Vy = -6.6

star and second planet - 240 , Vx - 147.4 , Vy = - 29.3

Using this simulation , it has been oberved that as the distance between star and planet increase, speed decreases. As the planet approaches star, it will have an increase in speed.
