To find the metersticks mass, I understand this method isn't correct, it needs to balance away from its center of mass. However, I dont know what equation i could create doing so or how it would work. Thank you

If the knief edge is placed just below the COM of stick then the contact forces are sufficient to balance the mass of stick .

So balancing this way does not give rise to balancing COMs by other forces which will result in calculation of mass of stick
