Question

To find the metersticks mass, I understand this method isn't correct, it needs to balance away from its center of mass. However, I dont know what equation i could create doing so or how it would work. Thank you

One student is attempting to find the mystery meterstick's mass, by placing the knife-edge pivot point directly under the meterstick's center of mass, and then hanging additional masses on the left and right until balance is achieved, as shown in the figure below. x1 x2 Mstick m2 m1 Will this student be able to calculate the meterstick's mass this way? If so, briefly explain how. If not, briefly explain why not

Explanation / Answer

If the knief edge is placed just below the COM of stick then the contact forces are sufficient to balance the mass of stick .

So balancing this way does not give rise to balancing COMs by other forces which will result in calculation of mass of stick
