Question

Corrective Lensers A pharmacy student has eyes who have a relaxed refractive power of 46 diopters and her retina is 2.3 cm from her tens. 1) Is she nearsighted or farsighted? (1) nearsighted (2) farsighted Type in the number that corresponds to your answer Submit 2) If she is nearsighted, what is her far point? If she is far-sighted, what is her near-point? m Submit 3) Let's say she wants to be able to focus clearly on objects that are from 150 m to 6 cm away. What is the power of the corrective tens she should wear assuming her glasses are 2 cm from her eye? Corrective Power diopters Submit

Explanation / Answer

focal length = 1 / p = 2.17 cm

applying the lens equation

1/f=1/p+1/q

1/2,17=1/p+1/2.3

==>p=38.3 cm

objects which are beyond 38.3 cm from the lens of her eye will be considered to be at infinite so images farther away will be focused at that point. Since the corrective lens is 2 cm from the eye, the image must be formed in front of the lens. Additionally since that distance is in front of the lens, same side as the infinite it is given by a negative sign

1/f = 1/inf-1/36.3

f=-36.3 cm = -0.363 m

The dioptic strength is given by the inverse

=-2.75 diopters
