Question
A small conducting spherical shell with inner radius a and outer radius b is
concentric with a larger conducting spherical shell with inner radius c and
outer radius d. The inner shell has a total charge of -2q and the outer shell
has a total charge of +3q. Determine the charges on surface a, b, c and d by Gausse's Law.
If possible be very detailed, my professors english isn't very good and i could really use an explanation. Also this isn't my homework or anything like that, it's a different take on an excersice from an online HW which was a T or F. ( So try to be correct as I don't have a way of making sure if it is or isn't)
Original from Lon Capa answered:
Select True or False for the following statements.
True: The electric field in the region r <a is zero.
True: The total charge on the inner surface of the small shell is zero.
True: The electric field in the regionc <r <d is zero.
False: The radial component of the electric field in the region r >d is given by +3q/(4(0)r^2).
True: The total charge on the outer surface of the large shell is +1q.
False: The total charge on the inner surface of the large shell is -5q.
False: The total charge on the outer surface of the small shell is -5q.
Explanation / Answer
a ) radial component of electric field is - q / 4 pi e_0 r^2 ( False )
b ) Total charge on the inner surface of small shellis -5 q ( False )
c ) The radial component of electric field c< r < d is - q / 4 pi e_0 r^2 ( False )
d ) Total charge on the outer surface of large shell is + 3 q ( True )
e ) Electric field r > d is zero ( False )
f ) Total charge on the outer surface of the small shell is - 1 q (True )
g ) Total charge on the inner surface of the large shell is + 1 q ( True )
