If biotechnology could make it possible for you to know of future genetic diseases in you or one of your family members, would you wish to use this technology to find out? What if it were used as a screen for employment (anyone seen GATTACA)?

Make your first postings by the end of WEEK 9

Make sure you come back by the end WEEK 10 to comment (thoughtfully) on at least 2 other classmates' postings.

Here is some info on DNA Music - I just thought this was too cool to pass up...fast forward to about 15:00 on the time bar once you get it downloaded if you don't want to hear the nice professor's introduction...which is also pretty cool...(it will take a while if you have a slow connection): and/or this very nice music associated with colleagues from thlecturer: ACTUAL DNA MUSIC (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. click the big play buttons by the manta ray or whale or swan.

Explanation / Answer

If biotechnology evolves enough to be able to predict future genetic diseases, I would really like to use it to the benefit of me and my family. As this way we can be healthy and prevent any major anomalies.

But, I am not in favour of using this method in screening for employment, as it will then be unfair to some people who despite having the qualities and capabilities may not be selected for particular jobs due to their genetic constitution. It may be a blow to fundamental human rights, as everyone deserves a fair chance. Yet, understanding the genetic make up may help us to be able to better understand which jobs are suitable for us, purely as a counselling and career guidance mechanism but not as a selection criterion.
