A company, which makes forging die wants to improve their steel parts and they contacted you because they heard you know a technology using martensitic transformation to make the surface of their steel product hard. The company selected AISI 1008 steel for their product, but after heat treatment they have no idea how to verify whether the heat treatment did a sufficient job or not. (a) What test will tell whether the heat treatment was good enough? (b) If you have hardness test among the potential testing methods in the list what kind of hardness tests are available and what specific hardness test are you going to suggest to the company? And why? (c) After suggesting the methodology to the company, the company engineer came back with a very low hardness value. What went wrong? We know that the heat treatment improves the mechanical strength of a material ike toughness,shear strength and yield strength of a material so for testing the heat treatment is good or not we can compare the mechanical propertoes of a material before and after the heat treatment.
Foe measuring the toughness of steel
We cam perform the charpy izod test .and compare the values before and after the heat treatment.if value increases so heat treatment is done good.and if the value is decreasing so heat treatment os done bad.
For shear strength we can perform the sheat strength test like triaxial shear strength test to caompare values.if the value after heat treatment is largwr than the value before haet treatment do heat treatment os done good or if the value is less than the before heat treatment shear strength so heat treatment is done bad.
Similarly we can perform the several test for yield strength test and can compare the values on stress vs strain curve .and after comparison of values before heat treament and after treatment we can examine whether the heat treatment is done good or bad.
