Instructions

1. Open Gas Properties and then use the pump to put a little gas into the box.

Observe gas particles’ behavior.

Pump in some lighter particles and talk about the similarities and differences that you see between heavy and light particles.

Use the simulation to see how changing the temperature affects the behavior of the gas particles.

Write a description for a gas based on your observations; include diagrams to help with your description.

2. Using the simulation, check how fast the air particles move at a selected temperature. For evidence, include how you used the simulation to collect data, and any calculations.

3. Determine the size of the heavy particle using the simulation tools and then relate molecule size to something you are familiar with. A common way to relate two things is to say something like: 1000 particles of sand fit in the palm of your hand. Show your calculations with the units clearly labeled.

4. Write a paragraph that explains the differences and similarities between solid, liquid and gas particle motion; include drawings to help with your explanations.

Explanation / Answer

1. motion of heavy and light particles
similarities : Both the particles are trying to occupy the maximum room, by cnostant elastic collsision with the boundary and each other, hence following brownian motion
differences : HEavy particels travel slowly and lighter ones travel faster
Increasing temperature increases the speed of the particles in the chamber and increases the pressure inside the chamber as well
Hence, these are ideal gas mixtures following ideal gas laws, like a mixture of Co2 ( heavy gas) with H2 ( lighter gas)

2. From measuring thelength of the chamber by ruler, l = 6.6 nm
time taken by heavy molecule at 570 k, t = 11.63*10^-12 s [ using stoP WATCH ]
so, speed of molecule = 567.49 m/s

3. So, at 2.8 atm pressure, 277 K temperature, 989 heavy particels of gas are there
this is the relative size of the molecules
