Question

Please write background about MICRO-GRID SYSTEM
1-SOLAR PANEL
2-WIND TURBINE

In the background section the student discusses recent (within the last 5 years) theories, ideas, methods, publications, similar applications, etc., that pertain to and/or were utilized during the project. In this section, create a taxonomy of prior work relevant for your project. Here you demonstrate that you have read and understand what others in the field have done. This ensures you (1) know the state-of-the-art, (2) are not directly copying others work, and (3) you know the performance levels you must achieve to make a contribution. As you discuss each related work, make note of how each has advanced the field. Then, enumerate how your project extends and enhances prior work. (Some capstones, such as business plans, may not require this section.)

Explanation / Answer

Grid:

Grid is nothing but a grouping of electrical power sources and loads.

Technically grid is defined as so many generators operating parallelly to provide continuous supply to loads.

We may treat grid as a Voltage source with negligible resistance.

Similarly microgrid.

Microgrid:

Microgrid is a mini version of grid.

Microgrid is a local grouping of so many power generating sources and loads and this microgrid is connected in synchronism with grid.

microgrid can operate in two modes

1. Grid connected 2. Island-mode.

Types of Microgrids:

1. College /Educational institutional Microgrids:

these type of microgrid major purpose is to provide the power supply to the loads within the educational institutions by generating the power supply locally(By using solar/wind)

2. Commercial microgrids

These type of microgrids are power produced by commercial and industrial organisations for their personal loads or local loads.

Success of these commercial microgrids depends upon

Components of Microgrid:

A. Source of Power generation (Diesel generators / Solar/ Wind)

B. Loads which consume power

C. Energy storage (Especially from Solar and Wind we generate D.C. power supply, which needs to be stored in batteries, and with the help of inverters needs to be converted into A.C.supply)

D. Point of Common coupling(PCC)

It is the point where microgrid is connected to main grid.

Challenges to Microgrid:

1. Solar Panels :

Photo Voltaic solar panels : The irradiance of sun will be converted into electricity with the help of Photovoltaic solar panels.

Solar power generation and utilisation:

Sun---> Solar Panels---->Batteries----->Inverter---->Load

2. Wind energy:

Let's use the power of nature to generate the Power.

Wind energy can be converted into electricity with the help of wind turbines.

A case study on Microgrid:

Location : Les Anglais, Haiti

Microgrid deployed at les anglais, Haiti consists of 3-tiered architecture with a cloud based monitoring and control service, a local embedded gateway infrastructure and a mesh network of wireless smart meters deployed at 52 buildings.

Non-Technical Losses(NTL) is a major challenge in providing reliable power supply in developing countries, these may include thefting of power, or tampering of meters.

generally NTL are around 11 to 16 % of total generation capacity. These losses should be as low as possible.

Consider the above issues when designing Microgrid.
