Question

Choose one of the following choices (a-d) to best fit the space provided in the following statements in (i)-(v):

(a) Personal Computer (b) Embedded System (c) Microprocessor (d) Microcontroller

i) Although the new line of Sony entertainment robots seems sophisticated, the code controlling the motion of the body parts is relatively straightforward; it is stored and executed on a simple stand-alone ___________________ chip.

ii) Lenovo has announced that it will form a new design team to develop a low power ___________________, which will be used as the brains of its new server products and help reduce the electricity bills associated with the computing centers.

iii) Even though most customers may not know, one of the independent ___________________s in a Mercedes is not only able to sense, digitally record, and display the humidity of the surrounding air, but will also be utilized in a future model to do automatic air humidity conditioning in tropical regions with the addition of few actuators.

iv) Sharp is adding a new solar tracking system to its fleet of efficient photovoltaic solutions, and is looking for a business partner to deliver a reliable ___________________ for the system with a reasonable price tag e.g. few dollars a piece when bought in mass quantities.

v) ___________________s have long ago entered everyday life in different form factors. Regardless of the performance characteristics, they enable us to perform a variety of distinct tasks through a direct and simple interface.

Explanation / Answer

i) Microcontroller

Microcontroller is an IC which contains Processing Unit, Read Only Memory (ROM) which stores the instructions, Read Write Memory (RAM) which is used as temporary storage during execution, Input/Output Unit to interface with the external world. Also it includes some controllers to do specific job. But connecting input device and output device with the Microcontroller, it can be converted as Microcomputer.

ii) personal computer

A “personal computer” is a computer designed to run general-purpose software, with the intention that it’s going to be used by one person at a time. Older versions were designed to be used by one person, period - and thus, did not have the concept of a “user account” or a “privileged user” - there was only one user and With the introduction of multiple accounts and multitasking into operating systems designed for personal computers, and modern networking, the difference has become smaller and smaller in terms of how “personal” and “server” computers can be used.

iii) Embedded System

It usually refers to small electronic devices. Say e.g. the system which controls a washing machine - to keep costs down you'd not go and install a full Core i7 with 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD in there now would you? So you end up with something even lower on the food chain than a Rasberry Py. Thus you're extremely restricted by CPU speed (and usually also a much reduced instruction set) and even more by RAM/Storage size.

iv) Embedded System

Embedded systems is a branch of electronics. Generally people think electronics means circuits, ICs, transistors, etc. Embedded means "hidden inside". A branch of electronic systems where you see components (hardware) outside, but those components are controlled by set of instructions (software), which is hidden inside the components is called embedded systems

v) Microprocessor

The microprocessor is the heart of any normal computer whether it is desktop, laptop, or server machine. The microprocessor contains all or most of the CPU functions. And it goes into motion the time you turn on your computer. It contains million of very small components that includes transistor, registers, and diodes that works together.Microprocessors help to do everything from writing to searching the Web. A typical microprocessor operations include adding, subtracting, comparing two numbers, and fetching numbers from one area to another.
