Please can anyone help me about my dissertation, it is about a motion detection system in matlab that can be serve as an intruder detection that can identify the moving object if it is a person or not. I'm beginning to become so anxious as i found nothing online that can help me build one. I've talked to m supervisor and request if I can just do a simple motion detection and just explain the algorithms of the system. There are a lot of articles on motion detection systems online. you just havent searched properly. I'm guessing your background is related to electrical opr electronics because otherwise you will have to do a lot of studying to implement such a system.
The most basic kind of motion detection system can be implemented using a microcontroller (8051 is simplest to work on) and an ultra sonic sensor. you will have to study the interfaciong of elements such as this ultrasonic sensor, LCD screen, and voltage regulator circuit etc. to a microcontroller in order to complete this. Ultrasonic modules are not very expensive to buy. They consist of transmitter and a receiver and sense objects that come in their spectrum of the ultrasonic sensor. The sensing is based on reflection of sound waves.
If you want to specifically detect a human being u will have to employ an image processing software which is going to be quite complicated. an alternate way would be to use a thermal detecting sensor such as a Passive Infrared sensor(PIR) these devices are cheap to buy and fairly easy to interface.It consists of pyro-electric sensor that detects the infrared radiation emitted from humans.
Instead of a microcontroller 555 timers can also be used in the transmitter and receiver section. This circuit can be built using a phototransistor and IR sensors.
