Q2.17. The figure on the right shows the age pyramids of the U.S human population in two years: 1970 and 1985. According to these age pyramids, which statement is most likely to be true about the difference between the 1970 and 1985 populations? The fecundity rate decreased prior to 1970 and continued to remain lower through 1985. The population growth rate increased greatly between 1970 and 1985 The population in 1985 is generally younger, which causes the measured birth rate to be higher

Explanation / Answer

According to the population study on fecundity on US population in the years 1970 and 1985 we can alalise one thing clearly that the fertility rate is higher in the population of 1985 in both males and females.

In the graph of the age pyramids we can conclude few points :

During the age scale of 5-10 years the graph has remained the same in both males and females in both the years. Later in the age scale between 10-15 years there is an increase in the graph in the population of both males and females in the year 1970 than in the year 1985. This could be explained because in those days there were child marriages. Often marriages took place at the age of 10 or even below that which means even before puberty in both males and females. So as soon as the couple or the married children gets into puberty stage they would give birth to their young ones at a very early age. This might be a reason for 100% of fecundity in scale of the population in the year 1970 was shown and there would have a slight decrease in child marriages or the age scale of giving birth to the young ones would have increased over a period of 15 years.

From the age between 15-30 years in both males and females there is an increased scale upto 100% of fertility shown in the graph in the population of 1985. This could be explained with a reason that over a period of time lapse of 15 years there was an improvement in child marriages and them giving birth between this age group which was the correct age for both males and females since by the age of twenties they would have developed all the muscle growth and strength to reproduce efficiently.

In the age between 40-45 both males and females showed upto 60% of scale of fertility in the group in both 1970 and 1985 population which means there was a constant decrease.

Later on in the Graph when comparing each and every age group there was a slight increase in the fertility in both males in the year 1985 population.
