Explanation / Answer

8. E. All of the above choices are true.

Prokaryote are bacteria and cyanobacteria. Their cell wall is made up of peptidoglycan. Cell wall is a hard rigid structure which prevent them from bursting. Some antibiotics like penicillum prevents cell wall synthesis in bacteria.

9. A. Phagocytosis is the ingestion of particles and may be performed by animal cells.

Animal cells have cell membrane as the outer covering which is flexible. So, they can ingest solid particles by enclosing them.

10. C. Transport proteins.

When molecules are large or charged, they are carried towards concentration gradient by transport proteins which carry specific molecules. When molecules move against concentration gradient, then also they are carried by specific transport proteins.

11. B. Pure culture.

12. C. Binary fission.

Binary fission is a process in which the cell divides into two and the genetic material is equally distributed to the two daughter cells.

13. C. Exponential phase.

It is rapid multiplication phase when new cells form. Cell wall and proteins are synthesized.

14. B. Production of secondary metabolites is greatest during stationary phase.

After the lag phase when the resources are exhausted, the stationary phase starts during which, bacteria produces some substances which are not involved with growth or reproduction of bacteria. These are called secondary metabolites.

15. 5000 X 26 = 320000 bacteria.
