Question
A small block of mass 45 g (.450kg) is released from rest at the top of a curved frictionless wedge of mass 206 g (.206kg) which sits on a frictionless horizontal surface as shown.
The acceleration due to gravity is 9.81 m/s2. Right is the positive direction.
When the block leaves the wedge, its velocity is 4.04 m/s to the right.
I found that the velocity "vb" of the wedge after the block reaches the horizontal surface is -.8825
What is the height h of the wedge? Answer in units of m
I keep getting .83188 by using H=v1^2/2g and it says its wrong...Thanks!
I don't have access to the picture right now but it has the small mass on top and the 2nd mass is sort of like a sloping hill (with just the right hall shown)
Explanation / Answer
by momentum banace
45*4.04=206*v
==> v=0.8825 m/s
by energy balance
mgh=1/2(0.045*4.04^2 +0.206*0.8825^2)
==> h=0.4474/(0.045*9.8)=1.0145 m
