Question

Name: BIO 105L Spring 2018 Midterm During my luciferase assay I will have a total of two wells for every ion channel I want to study, and I will place bacteria with the specific ion channel in their respective wells. In one well I will put in the miR-652 and in the second well I will give the negative control (has no mIR-652) in it. I will do the experiment S different times and average the data together. In the space below describe the parameters of controlled scientific experiments and use information from the prompt as examples of different parameters. (hint: discuss test group, sample size, etc.)/40 points] 2.

Explanation / Answer

Controlled variables significantly influence the experimental results. It tests the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. In a controlled experiments there are tylically two groups, one of which is a control group which is understood by a experimenter as normal. The other group is called the experimental group. The experimenter can manipulate this group.

The ion channel well where miR-652 is put is the experimental group, whereas the well in which miR-652 is not added is the control group. Here the sample size is 5. This sample is then used to make inference of the entire population. The 5 observations or sample size is usually taken to compute statistics because one observation is reserved for the degree of freedom and the two extreme values are occationally neglected.
