Question

Please help, will vote lifesaver!!!!

You are dropping a ball and watching it bounce. If mechanical energy were conserved during the bounce, the ball should bounce back to the height it was dropped from.

a) Do you expect mechanical energy (kinetic energy plus potential energy) to be conserved as the ball bounces off the floor? Explain your answer.

b) If it is not conserved, does the energy just disappear? Does it become some other form or energy? What form(s)?

c) What properties of the ball do you think will affect how high it bounces? Suppose you could look at a ball and hold it in your hand, but weren

Explanation / Answer

a. the energy is not totally conserved as the ball doesnot bounce back with same force b. the energy does not get disappear, it is converted into another form as the ball hits the floor it exerts some force on it as mechanical energy, but has no effect because of earth's mass c. the elasticity of ball, the air resistance upto some extent and the friction or in other words the surface of floor note. energy is totally conserved only on case of ideal system
