Question

Consider the following arrangement of two conducting hollow spheres with a point charge of Q0 = 4.10 ?C at the center. The inner sphere has a radius of 0.011 m and carries a net charge of Q1= -2.30 ?C. The outer sphere has a radius of 0.041m and carries a net charge of Q2 = 5.50 ?C.

1.)Calculate the magnitude of the electric field at point A located at a distance 0.021 m from the center.

2.)Calculate the surface charge density on the outer surface of the outer sphere. Neglect the thickness of the sphere.

Explanation / Answer

a)Point is in middle of both spheres
Electric field due to point Charge = k*Q0/r^2 = 9.8*10^9 * 4.10/ 0.021^2 =9.11*10^13 N/C

Electric field due to inner sphere =k*Q/r^2 = 9.8*10^9*(-2.3)/0.021^2=-5.11*10^13 N/C

Electric field due to outer sphere = 0 [since point is inside outer sphere]

So Enet = 10^13*(9.11- 5.11)=4*10^13 N/C

b)out =5.5/(4**R^2) =260.366 C/m^2
